A Fickle Mistress

Martineau Vermillion Interior Design

The word came down from the mountain that blue is the new trend.

I agree that indigos and bright navy blues and peacocks are seemingly taking favor for the moment. But what leaves me scratching my head is this…hasn’t blue or some form of it always been around?

In the interior design world, which is a bit slower than fashion and usually follows a cycle or two behind, we can’t tell our clients to change their color scheme each time a new color (or old one) becomes the latest and greatest.

What we can do as professionals, is lead our clients to make tasteful decisions regarding the colors they desire, in the shades that are currently in play.

It’s a lot easier on the pocketbook to purchase a new dress in the color of the moment than a new living room.

My clients who’s living room is pictured above and immediately below will be pleased to know that the indigo/peacock/navy blue sofa, table skirt and trims that I selected for them would be considered a part of latest trend in color.

So for the next fifteen minutes while green is on the front porch trying to get its foot in your door again, please enjoy the following…

Color (in decor and fashion) makes me chuckle as well…blue is fresh and new?! I agree with you…go with colors you love. Blue is timeless.

  2. Great post! So funny about how the editors must think that the masses run out as soon as they announce a “new and in” color has arrived to go out and redecorate their rooms. While it can make for entertaining reading, I would never allow a trend to dictate what I put into my home. That said, you pointed out and correctly that blue has always as far as I know been an ‘”in color” maybe they have fancier names for it now and more things come in blue but at the end of a day, a blue room is a blue room, right? I love the living room you did..gorgeous and rich…..I have always loved blue and imagine will always find a way to incorporate it into my home, trend or no trend:)

Only your blog could actually make me interested in home decor! It’s funny and smart and not condescending.

I think the saying,”There is nothing new under the sun” applies beautifully here. I did a post on this very subject claiming my color of 2011 would be a combination of adding more of what I already had, by using more blue and white in my home. I love all of your examples and I think blue is here to stay and I am very thankful for that.
